People Against Suits & Ties is here to remove the oppressive chokehold placed on us by suits and ties. We are an organisation whose sole mandate is to attain ultimate freedom for all individuals by abolishing the formal dress codes that rob us of our humanity.
We feel that if we lack the most basic right to dress ourselves as we choose then we cannot in all seriousness ever claim to be free or to enjoy true equal rights.
We believe the tie is a noose around democracy's neck.
Down with suits.

It's about time someone did this. Damn the man. Suits make me feel like I’m part of some robot work force doing “Big Brother’s” dirty work.

As a woman this strikes a very loud chord with me. I do not see why in this seemingly progressive working landscape women are forced to dress in an increasingly masculine manner to be perceived as a threat in a world where opportunities are supposed to be equal. This is an archaic thought process that women have begun to play into. If you look at women in positions of power they are invariably dressed in power suits complete with ties and masculine suit pants.

I completely agree with this. We live in the Rainbow Nation. We are celebrated for our diversity and our tolerance. Yet, we force our workforce to dress in restrictive suits that don’t tolerate their personal dress preferences. Suits are becoming the uniform of the oppressed. It oppresses our thinking and goes against our constitutional rights. Sign me up for the protests.

What is this? Some kind of joke? Get a life people.
6. Xenon (anonymous), Aug 26, 2008 3:54:00 PM #
Maybe we’ll get to the point where wearing a suit is such a novelty that we only do it on “Suit Fridays”
7. Anonymous (anonymous), Aug 26, 2008 3:54:42 PM #
They could call that “Serious Fridays”
8. Saki (anonymous), Aug 26, 2008 3:55:42 PM #

And doesn’t it feel like we have to pay a gazillion rand a month to dry clean our suits. I’m all for dressing casual.

There was this guy at my work that used to say “Friday is Tie day”. His energy would be great for this. In fact, he’s probably already a member.

Ties are totally like nooses around our necks. P.A.S.T. is the future.

I love this. Down with suits.

I used to be a lawyer but I hung up my law hat for good three years ago to become a restaurateur. I wish this PAST was around when I had to wear suits. Ties can feel exactly like a noose ten hours into a work day.

Just giving up suits for a day feels great, we should push for more casual Fridays.

Well, casual day is actually coming up in a couple of weeks time. It’s in early september I think.
16. Saki (anonymous), Aug 26, 2008 4:01:54 PM #
Ja, it’s on the 5th of September. That change will really feel like a holiday.

Ek moet saamstem. Kon nog nooit verstaan waarvoor mens 'n belaglike lappie om jou nek moet hang nie. Om nie eers van 'n warm baadjie in ons lieflike warm Afrika son te praat nie.

What the? Did anyone see the protest today in Hyde Park? I'm pretty sure I saw Richard Bands and Zane Kirchner there! My blood is blue...funny enough, so is my T Shirt!

This is the most ridiculous organization I've ever heard of. You are not forced to wear a suit and tie in a corporate environment. You can dress semi-formal. So are you against Millitary fatigues too? Soldiers should also be free to dress however they want? Why doesn't your brilliant founder also start "people against millitary fatigues (pamf)", I mean heck lets go all the way and start "People against Police Uniform".
Any South African is free to start his own business and dress in shorts to work, unfortunately his clients probably won't take him too seriously - its more so convention than "tyranny".
Get a life!!!

wearing suits and ties is like mugabe forcing the mdc to sign the manipulated power sharing talks and its humman rights violation
24. anonymous (anonymous), Aug 28, 2008 9:56:13 AM #
Ties are crap and even crapper when accompanied with a collar shirt. that is all.

Spizzy, who removed your sense of humour? Are suits making you sad. Do you not realise that past stands for more than just changing the way people dress? It's about changing the mindsets of those who feel trapped in their workwear. They mentioned that they are supportive of people who want to dress in suits and ties, but unfortunately the fact that we have a skewed perception of dress codes means that if my colleague dresses in a suit and tie and i choose to go "semi-formal" then i will be looked down upon by clients, colleagues etc due to my casual mannerisms in relation to that suited colleague. Past want people to express their own individuality and not have to be penalised for it by the archaic mindsets that you seem to be echoing. Even the name People Against Suits & Ties is clearly a way to get people's attention. And as for the police thing, even if we disregard the safety needs that require these brave men and women to wear the uniforms which they do, when did past mention that they were against the civil workers who choose to create a better country for us all to live in. Enjoy life in 2-D, Spiz.

I think is an great idea...its not a life sentence, its about taking yourself a little less seriously, i went past the protest yesterday in Hyde Park and was mildly irritated...as i got stuck in a bit of traffic, but i have to say this...whatever "this" is brought a smile to my face.
27. Ray Wolf (anonymous), Aug 29, 2008 11:00:40 AM #
You have got some serious celebrities on board. WOW!
I'm down with suits!....Strickly a jeans and T kind of guy. Except for special occasions that is.... regardless I got my sticker.
Well done. Great cause. Hope you raise lots of money for Casual Day.
28. Watershed Fan (anonymous), Aug 29, 2008 11:07:15 AM #
Saw one of your protests the other day at Hyde Park.
A real serious Protest for such a bunch of casual crew. Parked on the pavement and watched for a bit.
Got to meet Watershed! Great band! Anything they are involved in, has my support. Are you going to be doing more Protests? Would be keen to attend with a couple of my mates.

Hey, I phoned in to radio SAFM last night, but didn't get on the show while Ken Leigh was being interviewed! Anyways, that idiot that was hammering him didn't know what the F**K he was talking about. You guys may be a bit offbeat but at least you are doing some good. If he is against your cause.. then he must also be against your guys support for people with disabilities. He is the one who should "get a life" and maybe one that does some good!
30. Lima (anonymous), Aug 31, 2008 4:07:15 PM #
What if you're a nudist? Does that make you pro-birthday suit?
31. hot_girl_12 (anonymous), Aug 31, 2008 4:12:28 PM #
Nudism is fine by me. So long as you don't wear fake tan. We're people, not citrus fruit.
32. Ben (anonymous), Aug 31, 2008 4:17:45 PM #
Interesting comments on SAfm the other night. It was good to hear the public having their say. That leader sounds pretty passionate about the cause.
33. Adam (anonymous), Sep 1, 2008 11:28:48 PM #
So, I'm a nudst and guess where I'm putting my sticker in support of casual day. Think fig leaf!
34. Margret (anonymous), Sep 1, 2008 11:36:41 PM #
Get off your filthy topic of conversation you deviant bunch. This is a group of passionate people fighting to do some good in this world. Their support of Casual Day and "The National Council for People with Disabilities in South Africa" has absolutely nothing to do with your filthy comments.
Go chat on a sex group and leave this forum alone for people who believe that we should have our minds out of our pants, not our bodies. M.S

guys ...i have to say you rock! what crazy idea, very cool!

Wow Bronwyn, y'all are on a mission to change the world? Im-freakin'-pressive. People Against Suits and Ties? Very catchy though juvenile. So the movement is meant to have a clowny feel - that being deduced from your sense of humour comment.
"we have a skewed perception of dress codes" I'm sorry you have a skewed perception of dress codes.
As for your comments about civil workers creating a better society, that is kind of off topic. The issue here is people fretting over a non-issue such as dress codes - which is every business owners right to implement and enforce, just as it is to ensure that their resources give them bang for buck.
Oh, let me guess now you're going to fret over people being referred to as resources? Oh, oh, lets change that too. I'm starting a movement: "People Against Businesses Calling them Resources" Doesn't have the same ring to it though hey? :o)

So spizzy, have you got your R10 Casual Day sticker from Absa yet or not?
P.S. You pick your fights pretty early in the day, don't you?
38. Spizzy (anonymous), Sep 3, 2008 3:09:25 PM #
Not picking a fight, actually the only reason I come to this particular blog at all is coz when I turn on my PC, the banner is right in my face. Hope there's no offence there, just expressing a point of view like everyone else.
39. Person Against Spizzy (anonymous), Sep 3, 2008 3:18:22 PM #
Spizzy... these guys add a smile to people's lives with this movement of theirs they are also doing it for a really good cause Casual Day... so if there is any additional movement to be started it should be" People Against People on their High Horse Like Spizzy" What do you think?
So hop off that hoofed beast and buy your sticker.
40. Secret is to be nice (anonymous), Sep 3, 2008 11:46:21 PM #
Chill out guys... it is after all a movement in honor of all things casual. So all of ya, tone down that aggression and while you're at it, tone down the your dress code! Casual Day is this Friday. So casually put yourself into some relaxed attire and support a great cause.

Had a meeting with some of the auditors from Deloitte today... great to see that even the accountants dressed down! They had their stickers by the roll and could almost be mistaken for chilled out people!!! Nice guys. Impressed. Great to see big corporates getting behind this great cause. Sam
42. See the light (anonymous), Sep 6, 2008 3:19:50 AM #
Completely agree about chilling out... with the comments..... you guys are all taking this far too seriously.... Out company all dressed in their pajamas today....Had a complete blast... Inspired by PAST I decided to wear a long T-Shirt and a pair of slip slops with a tie that was cut in half.....! Amazing how differently people interact in the work environment with a change of dress... Perhaps suits really do restrict who we really are...know that's exactly the crux of your guys views... but didn't really take it seriously until I saw it in action today... Well done....

Does the man who loves his suit (and look fabulous in it) have a choice to wear whatever he wants, whether it is his sexy suit or tie or not?
